Evaluating Impact on a Professional Practice

Working with children you experience so much daily. One Ism that I've experienced since working in my profession is racism from a parent. I didn’t directly experience racism but the assistant teacher in my classroom did. We have 20 kids and 20-40 parents that we greet daily. One of my students father is very racist. He’s always coming into the classroom with negativity and he doesn’t talk to the assistant. I noticed that he’s always talking to me, showing me his id for pick and always asking me questioning that he could ask the assistance. When it first begin we over looked it and thought well maybe has just comfortable talking with me until one day I missed school due to my daughter being sick. He didn’t see me, knew I wasn’t coming and he picked his child up immediately. The center supervisor asked him why the child leaving so early he was stated “that one in his class is too dark for my child to learn anything from her”. The next day, I came back to school and this parent greeted me and welcomed me back. He begins to tell me that he picked his child back up after overhearing a conversation that my baby was sick. I politely asked the parent why you picked your child up that early. He replied calmly and nice because your skin completion is much lighter than the other lady skin complexions. I was shocked and I told this parent that he shouldn’t look at things the way he doe and he should considering apologizing for how he feel and what he has said. He got upset with me a pulled his child out of the class completely.
